The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix comes in as many shapes and sizes as their are other dog breeds.
This special breed has some serious health problems, and combining it with another could potentially keep that great personality but put it into a healthier body.
But which mix bred puppies are the best pets?
Let’s take a look!
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
In this special spaniel mix hub article, we focus on the Cavalier King Charles (CKC) Spaniel.
We will highlight some of the most popular crosses featuring this petite purebred spaniel dog breed.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stands 12 to 13 inches tall and weighs 13 to 18 pounds.
These dogs are known to be sweet-natured, people-centric, and flexible to adapt to their owners’ lifestyle.
Health and Care
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s signature long, flowing coat does require regular brushing to guard against tangles and mats.
Also prepare for some heavy shedding from this double-coated breed.
The Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) recommends that all parent (breeding) dogs be pretested for:
- hip dysplasia
- cardiac issues
- eye issues
- patellar luxation
This breed has the brachycephalic (flat-faced) muzzle, which can cause lifelong respiratory, digestive, visual, and oral health issues.
Chiari-like malformation is when the skull has a smaller, less-rounded back.
Syringomyelia is a disorder where the spinal cavities are fluid-filled.
These are two additional known genetic health issues that can produce lifelong health limitations.
Good Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeders only breed from dogs with a healthy muzzle shape.
They should not be breeding dogs who have experienced any of the problems associated with brachycephaly.
The breeders also wait until their breeding spaniels are at least 2.5 years old and commission an MRI scan.
This way they can make sure they won’t pass the genes for syringomyelia to any puppies.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s typical life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Mixes
The term hybrid vigor describes a theory suggesting that combining two different canine genetic lines can strengthen both.
Some dedicated breeders are using hybrid breeders to try to lessen genetic health risks like brachycephaly, chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia.
